Wheelhouse video specialist Dave Everly loves a challenge — and making magic for clients
Go ahead.
Give Wheelhouse Creative video production specialist Dave Everly a challenge.
Any challenge.
And watch him smile.
“I love solving complicated problems,” Everly says. “I don’t like hearing something ‘Can’t be done.’”
That’s because Dave has 1) made himself into one of West Virginia’s finest video production specialists as a self-taught man, and 2) proven anything can be done through his creations using visual effects (VFX).
“Knowing I can create something that engages a viewer’s emotions — whether that be for laughter, sadness or fear — based on something I create is a great feeling.”
Dave began his journey after his mother gave him his first camera. For fun he would create small in-camera effects. Fun, in fact, is a theme for Everly. He’s filmed friends in sketch comedies and worked with a local haunted house that’s helped him hone his craft.
Does he think outside the box? He can digitally animate that box to do whatever he wants.
Wheelhouse’s creative director Joe Monahan sees what’s behind his abilities.
“Dave has the ability to learn software programs quickly, which helps us tackle different types of projects in-house,” said Monahan. “Oftentimes we run into technical issues that we need to find ways around. Dave is also pretty good at that. His ability in those areas help to keep things moving.”
By the way, while his title is video production specialist, Dave has another way of looking at his job.
“I am a Video Generalist,” he said. “I do everything from 3D animation and simulations to video editing.”
Everly grew up mainly around Wintersville, Ohio, and has eight years of experience in the business with Wheelhouse. As mentioned, his specialty is VFX, which is “any effect that was created with a computer. Like 3D animation color correction or any form of layering footage on top of itself.”
Dave remembers when he caught the bug to chase this dream.
“I thought of it mainly as a hobby, filming with friends and making everything from funny sketches to short horror films,” he said. “It wasn’t until I made a commercial for the Wells Township Haunted House that I was introduced to Pat and Joe Monahan, then the owners of Shooters Productions and now with Wheelhouse. One day they asked for my help on a project to get a project out the door, and I never left.”
One of Dave’s favorite projects was a commercial for the aforementioned haunted house.
“It was a blast,” he said. “I had to organize 200 people dressed as zombies for a shoot. It felt like I was a part of a large Hollywood production.”
Everly knows visual effects inside and out. And he wishes more businesses would use the tool for its immense impact on consumers.
“It seems like more and more companies want quantity over quality when visual effects can really capture an audience’s attention and imagination,” he said.
It’s just another way Wheelhouse Creative LLC is special, said Everly.
“The ability of our staff to always try something new and innovative is what separates us,” he said. “It keeps us above the curve in every way possible.”
