A thank you letter to WVU women’s basketball player JJ Quinerly
Throughout the years, my writings have mostly relied on research. I learned as a journalist before turning to marketing to check and double check. I learned to seek the truth, which sometimes might be hidden from plain view.
But this? This is simply a thank you letter.
A thank you to WVU senior guard JJ Quinerly.
Because my Joni and I have so enjoyed watching her play for our Mountaineers.
As a former sports writer and columnist, I’ve seen some of the best play within our state’s craggy lines. Within the high school ranks, I saw Alexis Hornbuckle, Renee Montgomery and, recently, Alexis Bordas. At WVU, I saw Rosemary Kosiorek, Bria Holmes, Meg and Kate Bulger, Liz Repella and Tynice Martin.
And, JJ, I have to say you’re right up there. In fact, you’re one of the most fun to watch of all of them.
It’s that motor of yours. It never seems to idle. It’s your will to win. It never seems to stall.
That’s why it was good to see you again earn All-Big 12 first team honors and, again, the Defensive Player of the Year award. Deservedly, you were a unanimous selection for both the first and defensive teams.
You’re just the fourth player in Big 12 history to be named the defensive player of the year multiple times, joining Courtney Paris of Oklahoma (2006-07-08), Brittney Griner of Baylor (2010-11-12-13) and Lauren Cox of Baylor (2018-19).
That, JJ, is what’s called excellence.
You’ve played all 28 games this season. You’ve averaged 30.7 minutes a game. You’ve averaged 20.5 points a game, third best in the Big 12. Your teammate Kyah Watson, another all-defensive player, and you are 1-2 in league steals – with Jordan Harrison fourth.
You’ve led the Mountaineers to a 23-6 record and No. 11 NET ranking.
Which has brought a lot of smiles to WVU fans.
So, thank you, JJ. From Joni and I. From the Mountaineer Nation.
As another JJ from back in my day might’ve said, you’ve been absolutely dy-no-mite.
